Die katholische Reformbewegung Wir sind Kirche sieht bislang eine große Kontinuität, dass sich Papst Leo XIV. wie sein Vorgänger sehr engagiert und deutlich zu den brennenden Fragen von Krieg und Frieden, dem Schutz der Umwelt sowie der Ökumene positioniert und gleichzeitig innerkirchliche Reformprozesse fortführt. Wir sind Kirche wünscht Papst Leo Gottvertrauen, Gelassenheit, Energie und Unterstützung, damit er den hohen Anforderungen dieses Leitungsamts bestmöglich gerecht werden kann.

Fortführung Synodaler Prozess

Wir sind Kirche hat es sehr begrüßt, dass Papst Leo den von Papst Franziskus gestarteten weltweiten Synodalen Prozess konsequent ohne Zeitverzug weiterführen lässt, dabei die Bischöfe weltweit in die Pflicht nimmt und zu dezentralen Lösungen ermuntert. Mit dem vatikanischen Schreiben vom 7. Juli 2025 zur Umsetzungsphase der Weltsynode sind die Diözesen in aller Welt aufgerufen, erneuerte Praktiken und Strukturen im Leben der Kirche zu erproben und konkret im kirchlichen Alltag umzusetzen.

Dies ist auch eine starke Ermutigung für den Synodalen Weg in Deutschland, der jetzt zielgerichtet und hoffentlich von allen Bischöfen weitergeführt werden wird.

Die Versammlungen der Weltsynode 2023 und 2024 in Rom, die Wir sind Kirche begleitete, haben sehr deutlich gemacht, wie groß der Reformbedarf überall in der Kirche ist, um wieder glaubwürdig und missionarisch zu werden. Die Erwartungen an die Weltkirchenversammlung 2028 und bis dahin konkret sichtbare Ergebnisse sind deshalb zu Recht hoch.

Künftige Herausforderungen

Eine große Herausforderung für Papst Leo wird es in den kommenden Jahren sein, notwendige Strukturänderungen vorzunehmen, die Einheit der katholischen Weltkirche zu wahren und gleichzeitig die Unterschiede in den Kulturen und Lebensbedingungen zu berücksichtigen - und folglich den Ortskirchen mehr Entscheidungsfreiheit zu ermöglichen. Ausgehend von der gleichen Taufwürde aller geht es um die praktische Beteiligung des Volkes Gottes, vor allem um die vollkommene Gleichberechtigung der Frauen in allen Diensten und Funktionen. Die weitere Diskriminierung der Frauen ist weder biblisch noch theologisch begründbar. Genauso dringlich ist die weltweite Aufarbeitung sexualisierter Gewalt und der Abbau des Klerikalismus. Hier braucht es möglichst bald wegweisende Entscheidungen.

Zu hoffen ist, dass dies Papst Leo mit seinen Erfahrungen in aller Welt wie auch im Vatikan Schritt für Schritt gelingt. Die Kardinäle, die ihn ja mit großer Mehrheit gewählt haben, sowie die Römische Kurie sollten ihn in diesem Transformationsprozess proaktiv und vorbehaltlos unterstützen, fordert Wir sind Kirche.

Im Blick auf die Zukunft ist es Papst Leo beim jüngsten Weltjugendtreffen in Rom in überzeugender Weise gelungen, jungen Menschen Mut zu machen und sie zur Mitverantwortung einzuladen. Die Erwartungen sind groß, dass er sich weiterhin, wie schon geschehen, entschieden gegen christlichen Fundamentalismus und den in seinem Geburtsland aufkeimenden christlichen Nationalismus stellt.

Wir sind Kirche in Rom

An dem Treffen „Synodaler Teams und partizipativer Gremien der Weltsynode“ vom 24. bis 26. Oktober 2025 im Rahmen des Heiligen Jahres im Vatikan werden auf Einladung von Kardinal Mario Grech, dem Sekretär der Weltsynode, auch acht Delegierte von Wir sind Kirche International teilnehmen – ein Novum. In diesem Rahmen ist auch eine Begegnung mit Papst Leo vorgesehen.

We are Church: ‘Pope Leo - Different style, same goal’

The Catholic reform movement We are Church has so far seen great continuity in the fact that Pope Leo XIV, like his predecessor, is very committed and clearly positions himself on the burning issues of war and peace, the protection of the environment and ecumenism, while at the same time continuing internal church reform processes. We are Church wishes Pope Leo trust in God, serenity, energy and support so that he can fulfil the high demands of this leadership office in the best possible way.

Continuation of the synodal process

We are Church very much welcomed the fact that Pope Leo has consistently allowed the worldwide synodal process launched by Pope Francis to continue without delay, taking the bishops worldwide to task and encouraging decentralised solutions. With the Vatican letter of 7 July 2025 on the implementation phase of the World Synod, dioceses around the world are called upon to try out renewed practices and structures in the life of the Church and to implement them concretely in everyday church life.

This is also a strong encouragement for the Synodal Path in Germany, which will now be continued in a focussed manner and hopefully by all bishops.

The assemblies of the World Synod 2023 and 2024 in Rome, which We are Church accompanied, have made it very clear how great the need for reform is everywhere in the Church in order to become credible and missionary again. Expectations of the 2028 World Assembly of Churches and of tangible results by then are therefore rightly high.

Future challenges

A major challenge for Pope Leo in the coming years will be to make the necessary structural changes, to preserve the unity of the universal Catholic Church and at the same time to take into account the differences in cultures and living conditions - and consequently to allow the local churches more freedom of decision. Starting from the equal baptismal dignity of all, it is about the practical participation of the people of God, above all about the complete equality of women in all ministries and functions. Further discrimination against women is neither biblically nor theologically justifiable. Equally urgent is the worldwide reappraisal of sexualised violence and the dismantling of clericalism. Ground-breaking decisions are needed here as soon as possible.

It is to be hoped that Pope Leo, with his experience all over the world and in the Vatican, will succeed in doing this step by step. The cardinals, who elected him by a large majority, and the Roman Curia should support him proactively and unreservedly in this transformation process, demands We are Church.

Looking to the future, Pope Leo succeeded convincingly at the recent World Youth Meeting in Rome in encouraging young people and inviting them to share responsibility. There are great expectations that he will continue, as he has already done, to take a firm stand against Christian fundamentalism and the Christian nationalism that is burgeoning in the country of his birth.

We are the Church in Rome

At the invitation of Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary of the World Synod, eight delegates from We Are Church International will also take part in the meeting of ‘Synodal Teams and Participatory Bodies of the World Synod’ from 24 to 26 October 2025 as part of the Holy Year in the Vatican - a first. A meeting with Pope Leo is also planned in this context.
